This exceptional piece is a black basalt stone bust that depicts the Aztec goddess Mayahuel, and dates to the 14th century A.D. This carved bust is approximately 12.75 inches high, by 11.5 inches wide, by 5.8 inches deep from the back of the piece to the nose at the front, and was carved from a heavy and tight grained black basalt stone. This striking piece likely depicts Mayahuel, the Aztec goddess of the maguey plant and fertility. The Aztecs used the maguey plant to produce the fermented drink "pulque", which was served to nobles and warriors at Aztec religious festivals and celebrations. The detailed bust offered here shows the young goddess wearing triangular shaped earrings, and a crown of angular shaped maguey plant leaves. Her mouth is also seen open, and appears to have some of the maguey plant within. This piece also has a flat back, and the rounded face is carved in relief which was meant to be seen with a frontal view. There is also some remains of a cream colored stucco seen on the lower half of this piece, and on the flat back side. This piece was also likely completely covered with a vibrant cream and blue stucco. This piece was designed with an extended pinon at the bottom, and was also designed to be seen as a free standing type piece. This powerful piece was also likely inserted into a religious shrine or temple, and in addition, this piece may have been moved from place to place. This piece is intact, save for two chips at the base of the pinon, and this type of piece is a rare example, given the superb condition and that it is complete. This scarce and appealing Roman bronze horse dates circa 2nd-3rd century A.D., and is approximately 2.7 inches high, by 2.75 inches long. This complete piece is a standing bronze horse that has one raised front right leg, and the head is slightly tilted to the right. There is also a raised crown seen between both raised ears, and this may designate this horse as a regal mount such as the famous horse from antiquity, Bucephalus. The piece offered here may have been intended to represent Bucephalus, and the horse cult of Bucephalus was known during the Roman period, as the Romans during the Imperial Period were obsessed with Greek art and culture. This piece also has a silver wrap bent around the main body, and this indicates that this piece was a votive offering. The owner obviously wanted to add value to his offering, and this also indicates that the owner of this charming horse wanted a powerful offering. This beautiful Greek bronze kalyx bowl dates circa 5th-4th century B.C., and is approximately 4.5 inches in diameter, by 3.1 inches high. This attractive piece is a thick walled example, and was hand beaten from one solid sheet of bronze. This piece is intact with no repair and/or restoration, and has two normal and minute ground pressure stress cracks seen on the upper rim. Overall, this piece is one of the finest recorded examples, as the detail of the fluting seen on the sides is very sharp and detailed, along with the hand chased cable border seen at the center of the bowl. On the bottom base of this piece, there is a floral pattern which was a hand worked design. This piece has a very high degree of workmanship, and is an exceptional example of "Classical Period" ancient Greek art. This scarce and complete piece is an Atlantic Watershed volcanic stone joined couple that dates to Period V-VI, circa 800-1200 A.D. This piece is approximately 6 inches high, by 5 inches wide, by 1.75 inches thick, and is a complete example with no apparent restoration and/or repair. The Atlantic Watershed classification is commonly used for carved volcanic pieces of this type that are from Central America, principally Costa Rica. This piece was carved from a volcanic stone, and has exceptional details for the type, as one can clearly see the hair braids, facial features, and body molding. The standing woman is seen holding a trophy head under her right arm, and the man is seen holding an unknown object under his left arm. Both figures are nude, and likely represent a regal couple that is displaying their power and virility. Atlantic Watershed figurines of this type are also usually seen as a single individual, and are rarely depicted as a joined couple. This piece also has some minute light brown/black mineral deposits, and some slight wear in various sections of the piece. This exceptional vessel is a Greek bronze phiale that dates circa 5th-4th century B.C., and is approximately 6.4 inches in diameter, by 2.1 inches high. This piece is in mint condition with no repair and/or restoration, and has a beautiful and thick dark green patina, with dark brown and blue highlights. In addition, there are sections of this vessel's surface that has a gold gilt, and this gold gilt is seen mostly on the inner surface of this vessel. There is also a small round hole seen near the rim on one side, and this allowed one to suspend this piece with a leather cord. On the inside center, there are three hand beaten concentric circles, and these circles frame a raised circular roundel known as a "omphalos". In the ancient Greek mind this also represented the center of the world, and the ancient Greeks viewed the sacred site of Delphi in a similar context. This "omphalos" also served as a finger grip, as this vessel was used in religious ceremonies for the pouring of libations such as wine. The sacred design elements seen within this type of vessel also make this vessel the Greek libation vessel "par excellence". This scarce Egyptian terracotta lion head bust dates to the Ptolemaic Period, circa 323-30 B.C., and is approximately 2 inches high, by 2.5 inches wide from ear to ear. This piece has a very serene expression, and is a scarce type, as most depictions of Egyptian felines are small cats that are usually depicted in bronze. The feline seen here is likely a young lion, as there are long fur details seen running along the lower jaw, and large eyes centered above a thick snout. This piece may have been part of a larger figure that had a wooden body, and was from a composite type piece. This piece is a light tan terracotta, and has exceptional incised details within the ears, nose, and eyes. This piece is intact, save for some stress cracks and minor stabilization fill at the back. This intact and superb faience Egyptian shabti dates to the Late Period, 26th Dynasty, circa 664-525 B.C., and is approximately 6.9 inches high. This esoteric green glazed shabti is intact, and has no repair and/or restoration. This piece is also a large example for the type, and has a very esoteric face with a slight smile and detailed molded body features. This piece is a mummiform standing figure with a tripartite wig, with a seed bag slung over his left shoulder, and is seen holding a pick and a hoe. This piece also stands upright by itself, as it has a flat bottom, and a dorsal pillar is seen on the backside. This rare Greco-Roman bronze depicts Alexander the Great's war horse Bucephalus, and dates to the late Hellenistic Period, circa 1st century B.C.-1st century A.D. This lively piece is approximately 2.4 inches long, by 2.75 inches high, and is a rare type that is designed with a square base plate. This piece easily stands by itself, and has a beautiful emerald dark green patina. This piece has a very lively designed head that is seen slightly tilted to the left, along with a slight turn of the neck to the left as well. In combination, this is a Greek Hellenistic convention of art that is also seldom depicted in subsequent Roman works of art. In addition, the mouth is slightly open, and the body appears to be prancing, as the left front leg is raised, but Bucephalus also appears to be depicted with no motion, and the horse's musculature and facial features indicate the end of "a tremendous exertion". This horse also has a main that is parted at the crest of the neck, and appears to have been cut. This is also an additional Greek Hellenistic convention of art that is also seen on the marble horse fragments now seen in the British Museum that are thought to have been attributed to the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus, circa 353-350 B.C. (See "Fourth-Century Styles in Greek Sculpture" by Brunilde Sismondo Ridgway, University of Wisconsin Press, 1997, pp. 111-130, pl. 29. See attached photo.) It may be that the piece offered here was possibly modeled after these fragments and the building noted above. Bucephalus is also seen wearing a regal lion's skin, and the head of the lion is seen draped over the front of the chest. There is also a raised chevron seen between the ears that also resembles a raised horn, and this is also a regal symbol. Bucephalus meaning "ox-head", was reported to have been a massive creature with a large head, and was described as having a black coat and a large white star on his brow. He was thought to have been in the major battles of Issus and Guagamela, and finally succumbed to injuries after the Battle of the Hydaspes in 326 B.C., and is thought to have been buried in Jalalpur Sharif, Punjab, Pakistan. This piece is completely intact, save for an old repair to the tail, and has some spotty dark brown mineral deposits. The lively and rare piece offered here was likely owned by a wealthy individual who may have been in a horse related business, or the military. The "Cult of Bucephalus" was also very strong down into the Roman period, especially in the eastern Roman provinces. The piece offered here with these Greek Hellenistic conventions of art is seldom seen on the market, and is an exceptional example. This piece also has a Plexiglas display stand. This mint quality Roman glass plate dates circa 3rd-4th century A.D., and is approximately 9.5 inches in diameter by 1.85 inches high. This exceptional example is in mint quality condition, and has no cracks, chips, or any other surface markings. This attractive piece is a light green glass with a beautiful patina, and has a brilliant golden patina with multi-colored iridescent highlights. This piece also has an applied double base ring, and is a rare feature, as most Roman glass plates of this type have a single base ring. This feature was also added in order to give this exceptional glass plate added stability, and allowed this vessel to hold items that had some added weight such as a full plate of fruit. This rare Egyptian faience offering cup with the cartouche of Merenptah dates to the New Kingdom Period, circa 1213-1203 B.C., and is approximately 2.25 inches high, by 1.7 inches in diameter at the rim. This example is in flawless mint quality condition, and has an attractive light blue/green faience glaze, both on the inside and outside surfaces. There are also some spotty light brown mineral deposits, and the faience glaze is rather even over the entire piece. In addition, there is a black glazed cartouche of the pharaoh Merenptah, and above, a hieroglyphic inscription meaning "Lord of the Lands". On the inside of this large offering cup, there are the preserved remnants of a calcified light brown material that is in the bottom half inch of the cup. This esoteric piece also has a gracefully designed flared upper lip, and a matching flared bottom base ring. The bottom of this piece is flat, and this piece easily stands upright. There is also an old inventory number "7B", seen inscribed on the flat bottom as well. The pharaoh Merenptah was the son of Ramses II, and was 60 years of age at his accession in about 1213 B.C. He was known for defeating a large force of invaders known as the "Sea Peoples", who are thought to have destroyed much of the Mycenaean palaces and cities. Egypt was one of the few great civilizations that survived through those turbulent times, and Merenptah, and his father Ramses II, are credited with saving Egypt. The rare offering cup offered here is an excellent example from the period, and clearly displays the name of the pharaoh. This scarce piece is a scarce Chimu/Inka seated priest and dates circa 1000-1400 A.D., and is approximately 8.2 inches high. This piece is intact, and has some minute spotty black mineral and white calcite deposits. This seated priest ceramic has an orange/red slip that covers the entire vessel, and he is seen wearing a raised conical hat, along with a cape that is tied under the chin. The figure seen here with almond shaped eyes, and the typical conical hat, is also often associated with Chimu/Inka ceramics and wooden marker posts. This charming figure is seen with a slight smile, and appears to be offering a huge shell for a sacred ceremony. This huge cream-colored shell also appears to be a "spondylus" type shell, and was sacred to both the Chimu and Inka cultures. This cream colored shell also stands out against the orange/red slip of the priest, and highlights the importance of this shell. The shell depicted here likely represents a "spondylus limbatus" species, which also can exceed 25 cm in width. These sacred shells were often placed in burials, and in fields to ensure rain for the crops. In addition, these shells were used for regal jewelry, and only Chimu/Inka priests and shamans were allowed to handle them. This piece also has a flat bottom, and has a "stirrup" type handle that is seen at the back. There is also what appears to be a small corn ear seen on the back of the handle as well, and this ties in to the spondylus shell's role with the promotion of rain for the crops. These two matching East Greek kylix cups date circa mid 6th century B.C., and are approximately 3.1 inches high, by 7.25 inches wide from handle to handle. These two kylix drinking cups are intact, save for some some minor scrapes, minute chips, and surface scuffs. These pieces also have some attractive root marking, seen mostly on the inner surface, and some spotty black mineral deposits. The inner surfaces also have a thick black glaze, and the main body of these pieces have a raised fluted base. These pieces are very esoteric in design, and are derived from "Attic Little Master" cups. These pieces are also classified as being "East Greek" types, and have been classified as being produced in Rhodes and several East Greek cities such as Ephesos. This expressive piece is a Jama-Coaque bust of a shaman that dates circa 500 B.C.-500 A.D., and is approximately 4.5 inches high. The Jama-Coaque culture lived in the tropical forest coastal region of northern Ecuador near the Esmeraldas River, and they produced high quality ceramics with detailed features. One such piece is the detailed bust offered here, and it is a bust of a shaman with incised fine-line facial tattoos. This piece is a fragment of a complete individual, and this type is one of the finest detailed busts, as it has a thick dark red glaze over the face with incised details that were carved into the glaze before it was fired. A great many of the Jama-Coaque ceramics are not glazed, and are made from a plain light tan terracotta. The bust seen here may also depict an important person, and this piece may also have been ceremoniously broken as well. This face also has "coffee-bean" eyes, and may show this shaman in a drug induced trance. This shaman has an open mouth, a regal nose ring, and a cap that extends to the back of the head. This mint quality and scarce Roman glass jug dates to the 1st-2nd century A.D., and is approximately 4.5 inches high, by 4.1 inches in diameter. This attractive glass vessel has a thick single strap handle applied below the lip, and has seven concentric circles that run around the main body of the vessel. These concentric circles were added as a measuring indicator, and was an an aid in determining the amount of liquid that was remaining in the vessel. These lines were ground into the surface after this piece was hand blown. There is also a slight indented depression centered on the bottom that lends this vessel some added stability, and a turned, out and down, wide lip which produced a very thick and strong extended lip. This exceptional mint quality and flawless vessel is a light green glass with a multi-colored patina, and has some spotty thick dark brown encrusted mineral deposits. Roman glass jugs with this type of design are scarce on the market, and are derived from earlier Greek Hellenistic types of glass vessels that have incised concentric lines. This complete and interesting piece is a votive gold Muisca "Tunjo" warrior/priest figurine that dates circa 10th-16th century A.D., and is approximately 2.1 inches high, by 9 inches wide at the shoulders, by .45 inches deep at the extended feet. This piece is a solid example and weighs approximately 8.5 grams. This piece is also complete, has no restoration/repair, and was cast as one solid example. This piece was not worked and polished after casting, and is as it was when it came out of the mold. The arms, eyes, nose, mouth, ear-flares, and raised crown is made from a tubular type construction. This tubular construction built up on a flat plank design, are also principle artistic hallmarks relative to votive gold figurines from this culture. There is also a raised casting sprue seen at the back base of the feet, and this also attests to this piece being unfinished after casting. This type of piece was made purely as a votive object which explains why these pieces were not finished, and this particular piece likely represented a warrior/priest, as he is seen wearing a regal raised crown. This piece was also created to bring one closer to the gods, and gold objects like this were believed to have been able to interact with them. Several analogous examples are also seen in "Sweat of the Sun and Tears of the Moon", by Andre Emmerich, Hacker Art Books, New York, 1977, pp. 83-88. This piece also has some spotty minute green cuprite and white calcite deposits, has a light hazy patina, and is in it's natural "as found" mint quality condition. The majority of pieces of this type have also been over cleaned and polished, and do not have the exceptional surfaces that this piece has, and as such, is a scarce to rare example. This extremely rare piece is a Greek bronze frog fibula that dates to the Hellenistic Period, circa 3rd-1st century B.C., and is approximately 1.75 inches high. This piece is complete, save for the thin missing pin at the back, and has no repair and/or restoration. This piece has a beautiful and thick dark green patina, with some minute dark red highlights. This appealing piece has two bulging eyes, a wrinkled neck, indented spots, and folded legs. This piece also likely had a silver gilt, and minute silver deposits can be seen as well. The view of this piece is from the top, and is seen as it would be seen while sitting on the ground ready to jump. The back of this piece is slightly concave, and has the two pin attachments. The wearer of this fascinating piece may have wanted others to remember the myths, and according to Greek myth, the frog referred to fountain deities, and the mythical story of the goddess Latona: Latona, on one of her travels, stopped at a pond to satisfy her thirst, but the peasants gathered there prevented her from drinking, and the goddess in revenge, turned them all into frogs. This lively piece is a Roman bronze dolphin handle that dates circa 2nd-3rd century A.D., and is approximately 2.25 inches long, by 1.9 inches high. This piece is complete, and is an intact example with no restoration and/or repair. This solid piece was cast as one piece, and has a pronounced upper dorsal fin, a lively twisted tail, and a base tab that the head and snout is attached to. This piece was likely attached to a vessel, such as a large cauldron, and may also have served as a decorative element, as well as a handle. This piece has a beautiful dark green patina, and is a superb example for the type. This piece is also mounted on a custom display stand. Ex: Joel Malter collection, Los Angeles, CA., circa 1980's. This piece is an extremely large Vicus/Mochica gold gilt bronze roundel-pectoral that dates to the Early Intermediate Period, circa 400-200 B.C., and is approximately 16.2 inches in diameter. This massive piece covered the upper torso of a priest during a religious ceremony, and hung around his neck from three holes seen at the top. This extremely rare bronze roundel-pectoral also has a gold gilt surface on both sides, and had a great deal of powerful eye appeal for the ceremony, as this piece had a bright gleaming presence. The gold gilt is also seen with a light to dark green patina, along with some spotty dark brown mineral deposits. This vibrant piece was also likely meant to represent the sun, and played a key role in an important ceremony. The ceremonial costume of this priest likely had additional gold and/or gold gilt additions such as a crown, arm bands, and a cloak. This gold gilt roundel-pectoral may also have had some additional hanging objects to complete the striking look of a ceremonial priest who wore this piece, and he was also likely a regal member of this culture. It's also very likely that this piece was part of a "mummy bundle", as there are also some spotty textile fragments adhered to Side A. (For numerous examples of mummy bundles that display ceremonial priestly and regal regalia see: "The Royal Tombs of Sipan", by Walter Alva and C. Donnan, 1993.) The exceptional and rare piece offered here is also very solid, as it is approximately 3/16 inch thick, and was cast as one piece, and was hand beaten into shape. This piece is also slightly concave, and is not perfectly round as well. (This type of piece was also identified by Christopher Donnan in "Moche Art of Peru", University of California, pp. 166-167, fig. 244, as being held by "Figure B" in a mural at Panamarca. See attached photo. "Figure B" was also identified as being a principle figure in the so-called "Presentation Theme", who is seen holding/wearing a ceremonial disk pectoral, an owl type mask, and is seen presenting a goblet to "Figure A", who is identified as being a high priest.) This massive piece is extremely rare, is seldom seen on the market, and is displayed within a custom 20 by 20 inch shadow box, and can easily be removed.
